HRToolbench, Arbita Study Finds That HR Will Focus on Performance Management in 2010

Survey shows HR strengthened its role during the recession, looks ahead to a rebuilding year.

PROVIDENCE, RI (October 26, 2009) - After two years of recession, human resources leaders are looking ahead to a rebuilding year in their organizations in 2010. However, these HR leaders believe that their performance during the recession has strengthened their position, according to a survey released today that was co-sponsored by HRToolbench and Arbita. The results of the survey are available in the report, "State of the Union in HR: Looking Ahead to 2010," available for download now.

Research shows that 48 percent of respondents feel HR’s role in their organization is stronger, and a similar number feel that frontline managers in their organizations have come to rely on HR more than before.

Even though HR believes it has improved its stature, it still realizes that it faces lots of work ahead after the job, benefits and wage cuts of the past two years. Performance management will be a significant focus in 2010, and 74 percent of respondents are highly likely or likely to be engaged in helping managers define and communicate performance expectations to employees.

“As the recovery takes hold and people-management issues become more critical, workforce performance and productivity will continue to be strategic imperatives,” said Robert Levy, President of HR Technology Solutions, Inc. “Improving individual performance and connecting the work of individual employees to business objectives can have a powerful business impact on an organization, especially as part of an integrated talent management suite.”

But a rebound in the job market could also add a degree of difficulty to HR’s job. After employees believe they have more employment choices, the retention of key personnel will become a critical issue. “As job markets tightened and layoffs became more widespread, many employees were simply looking to keep their jobs,” Levy said. “As hiring rebounds in 2010, a key focus for HR will be retaining key employees. Implementing career paths, defining the talent needs and skill levels, adjusting ranges to assure competitive pay practices, and focusing on training are all effective ways to improve retention.”

To find out more about the tactics and initiatives that human resource professionals plan to implement in 2010, download the research report, “State of the Union in HR: Looking Ahead to 2010,” now. Based on answers from almost 400 survey respondents across all levels of HR and organizations of all sizes, there is indeed cause for optimism. Find out what they are saying today.
